Flower Power

Good green: Spinach. Wheatgrass. Recycling.

Bad green: Envy. Greed. Chlorinated hair.

Best green: flowering green tea.

From the southwestern part of Yunnan Province in China, near the borders of Laos and Vietnam, Shooting Star Flowering Tea has all the benefits you've come to expect from a green tea—delicately layered flavors, lightly sweet aroma, helpful antioxidants—with one sensational boost.

This tea blossoms. That's because Shooting Star's premium green tea leaves have been sewn by hand into small rosettes by artisans in China (the artisans are well paid for their craft). Dried flower bulbs, dampened with a bit of water, are then sewn into the center of the rosettes with a thin piece of cotton string.

When steeped in hot water, these delicate clusters of tea leaves open. We watched, as two beautiful pink amaranth bulbs appeared, blossomed in our glass teapot and floated upwards. The whole process took several luxurious minutes.

When we finally got around to sipping, we noticed a hint of fruit flavor and a total lack of bitterness. The tea was pleasantly toasty, and kept its taste after two more steepings.
